

Havan Procedure
The performance of Havan is an integral part of the lives and all Hindus throughout the world. The following is a basic outline followed by most of the Hindu’s from Trinidad and Guyana which can be utilized in Mandir or at home. This give a step by step process with prayers for some basic deities such as Ganesh, Durga, Lakshmi, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Let us all stand with hands joined together and pray:
Tvameva maataa cha pitaa tvameva,Tvameva bandhu cha sakhaa tvameva,
Tvameva vidyaa dravinang tvameva,Tvameva sarvang mama deva deva.
Oh God! You are my mother, you are my father, you are my knowledge and learning, for you are everything to me.
Paapoahang paapa karamaahang, Paapa-atmaa paapa sambhavaa,
Traahi maang pundari-kaakshang, Sarva paapa haro hari.
In thought word and deed, I have committed many sinful actions. I supplicate my sinful soul unto you, Oh Lord, so that my sins may be taken away.
Mantra hinang kriyaa hinang, Bhakti hinang janaardanang,
Yat-pujitang mayaa deva, pari purnang tadaas-tume.
Lord, I do not know the proper words to chant of your glories or the proper way to perform puja unto Thee. I do not possess proper devotion; however, I supplicate myself to Thee in worship.
Om Prithvi tvayaa dhritaa lokaa, Devi tvang Vishnunaa dhritaa,
Tvang cha dhaaraya maang devi, Pavitraang kuru cha-aasanam.
Oh Maata, just as Lord Vishnu preserves and sustain you, in the same manner purify and make pure my place of sitting.
Take your seat and wash your hands:
Om hastang prakshaalanam samarpayaami Govindaaya namah.
Take water in your right palm and sip each time the word svaahaa is read:
Om amrito-pastarana-masi svaahaa.
Om amritaa-pidhaana-masi svaahaa.
Om satyang yashah shri mayi, Shri shrayataang svaahaa.
Wash hands again:
Om hastang prakshaalanam samarpayaami Govindaaya namah.
Take water in left palm and use with ring finger of right hand to touch the parts of the body as per mantra:
Om vaangame aasye-astu. (Lips)
Om nasorme praano-astu. (Nose)
Om akshnorme chakshur-astu. (Eyes)
Om karnayorme shrotram-astu. (Ears)
Om baahorme balam-astu. (Shoulders)
Om urvorme ojo-astu. (Thighs)
Om aristaani-me-agaani,
Tanus-tanvaa-me saha santu. (Entire Body)
Oh Lord, let my lips have speaking power, my nose inhaling power, my eyes seeing power, my ears hearing power, my shoulders and thighs strength to perform daily tasks onto Thee.
Now that we have purified our place of worship and our bodies, we can proceed to offer prayers to the different manifestations of God.
Take flowers in the hand as we begin with the Svasti Vaachanam:
Om Svasti na Indro vrid-dhashravah, Svasti nah pushaa Visva-vedaah,
Svasti nastaarkyo aristinemi, Svasti no Brihaspatir-dadhaatu.
Om payah Prithivyaang paya au-sha-dhi-shu, payo divyantarikshe payodhaa, Payasvati pradisha santu mahyam.
Om Vishnora-raata-masi Vishno svaptres-tho, Vishno Syurasi Vishnor dhruvosi, Vaishna-vamasi Vishnave tva.
Om Agnir devataa Vaato devataa Suryo devataa Chandramaa devataa, Vasavo devataa Rudraa devata-Aditya devataa Maruto devataa, Vishve-devaa devataa Brihaspatir-devataa Indrodevataa Varuno devataa.
Om Dyau shaanti-rantariksha-gavang shaanti, Prithivi shaanti-raapa shaanti-raushadhaya shaanti
Vanaspataya shaantir-Vishve-devaa shaantir-Brahma shaanti, sarva-gavang shaanti,
Shaanti-reva shaanti shaanti saa maa, shaanti-redhi.
May God in all of His forms accept my prayers and shower peace to all beings everywhere.
Take fresh flowers in your hands as we offer prayers to Lord Ganesh:
Om Ganapati bhyash-cha vo namo namo, Vraate-bhyo vaata pati bhyash-cha vo namo namo,
Gritse-bhyo gritsa-pati bhyash-cha vo namo namo, Virupe-bhyo vishva-rupe bhyash-cha vo namo namah.
To Lord Ganapati, who is all knowledgeable and is full of bliss, whose puja is the first among Gods and whose head takes the form of the elephant, I salute again and again.
Om Vighnesh varaaya varadaaya, Surapriyaaya,
Lambo-daraaya sakalaaya, Jagad-ditaaya.
Om Naagaa-nanaaya shruti-yagya, Vibhu-shitaaya,
Gauri sutaaya Gana naatha, Namo namaste.
To the son of the Goddess Gauri, who is the Lord of the Ganas, and who is full of intelligence and showers it upon the world, I ever so adore again and again.
Om Gajaa-nanam bhuta ganaa-di sevitang,
Kapit-tha jambu phala chaaru bhaksha-nam,
Umaa sutang shoka vi-naasha kaarakang,
Namaami Vighnesh-vara paada pankajam.
To Lord Shri Ganesh, who takes away all evil forces, who partakes of the kapit-tha and jambu fruits, who is the son of the Goddess Umaa and destroys all misery, I supplicate to Thy lotus feet.
Take fresh flowers in your hands as we offer prayers to Maata Gauri:
Om Sarva mangala mangalye, Shive sarvaatha-saadhike,
Sharanye trayambake Gauri, Naaraayani namo-astute.
Salutations unto Thee Oh Maata Gauri, for You are the source of all bliss. Oh beloved spouse of Lord Shiva, please take me under your shelter.
Om Jai Jai Giribara raaja kisori, Jai Mahesa mukha chanda chakori,
Jai Gaja badana shaRha-nana maataa, Jagata janani daamini-duti gaataa.
Victory! Victory unto the daughter of the king of mountains. Victory to the beloved spouse of Mahesa whose beauty is more radiant than the stars and moon. Victory to the mother of Ganesh, Kartikeya and the world itself.
Light the Diya and take fresh flowers in your hands as we offer prayers to Lakshmi Maata:
Om Lakshmi karo-tu kalyaanang, aarog-yang sukha sampadaam
Mama shatru vinaa-shaaya, dipa jyotir namostute.
To the Mother of Light and dispeller of darkness, who takes away my sickness and misery and bestows all happiness, wealth and prosperity, I supplicate myself unto Thee.
Om Sidhi budhi -prade Devi, Bhukti mukti pradaa-yini,
Mantra murati sadaa Devi, Mahaa Lakshmi namo-astute.
I prostrate myself to Mahaa Lakshmi, who is the giver of intelligence and knowledge, who gives liberation to the world and whose form takes that of mantras.
Om astomaa sada-gamai, Tamaso-maa jyotir gamai,
Mrityor maa amritam gamai,
Aano bhadraa kritavo-yantu vishvataa.
Lead me oh Mother from the dark path of ignorance and arrogance unto the path of light and prosperity.
Om Shri Lakshmi Maata cha vid-mahi, Vishnu-patani chaa-dhi mahi, Tano Lakshmi Maata prachodayaat.
I salute Shri Lakshmi Maata who is the giver of intelligence and all bliss, and who is the beloved wife of Lord Vishnu.
Take fresh flowers in your hands as we offer prayers to Trimurti Bhagavaan:
Om Yang Brahmaa Varun Indra Rudra marutah, Stunvanti divyai stavair,
Vedai saanga pada kramopani shadair, Gaayanti yang saamagaah.
Om Dhyaanaa vasthi-tatad gatena manasaa, Pash-yanti-yang yogi-no,
Yas-yaan-tang na vidhu sura-asura ganaa, Devaaya tasmai namah.
Salutations to that God whom Brahma, Varuna Indra, Rudra and the Murutas praise with devine hymns, whom the Saama chanters sing by the Vedas in their pada and krama methods from the Upnishadas. I pay obedience to that Lord whom the yogis are ever so absorbed in meditation and to whose end the devas and the asuras know not.
Om Shaantaa kaarang bhujaga shayanang, pad manaa-bha sure-shang,
Vish-vaa dhaarang gagana saadri-shang, megha varna shu-bhaang gam.
Lakshmi kaantang kamala nayanang, yogi bhir dhyaana gamyang,
Vande Vishnu bhava bhaya haranang, Sarva lokai ka-naatham.
Salutations to Lord Vishnu, the dispeller of the fears of rebirth, the Lord of all regions of a tranquil nature, who lying on a bed of snakes brought forth (from the navel) the Lord of all the celestials, the Lord of Lakshmi.
Om Karpura gauram, Karunaa vataaram,
Sansaara saagara, Bhuja-gendra haaram,
Sadaa vasantam, Hirdayaara vinde,
Bhavam Bhavaani, Sahitam namaami.
To Lord Shiva who is as white as camphor, who is all merciful, who is an ocean of all bliss in this and every world, who is ever so loving to His worshipers, the divine spouse of Bhavaani, I prostrate myself unto Thee.
Place flowers down and take fresh flowers in your hands as we offer prayers to Agani Deva:
Om Agani prajolitam vande, Jaata vedhyam hotas-hanam,
Suvaranaa varanaa mamalam sanidhyam, Vashisyato maukam.
Place flowers down and Light the Kunda with the following mantra:
Om Bhur bhuvah svaa, Dyauriva bhumnaa, Prithivi va varimnaa,
Tas-syaaste Prithivi, Deva yajani pristhe,
Agni manaa daman-naa dhyaa-yaa dadhe.
The three worlds (Bhu, Bhuva, and Sva) are as vast as the sky and are to be regarded as Mother Earth. I ignite this fire on this alter on this earth.
Fan the fire:
Om Udbu-dhyasva agne, Prati jaa-grihi, Tvamistaa purte, Sansri-jethaa mayacha,
Asmint-sadhaste, Adhyut-tarasmin, Vishve devaa, Yajamaa-nash-cha sidata.
Oh Lord Agani, flame up. You are the life work and you receive all offerings of sacrifice. Let the Gods and the noble ones be seated on the northern side.
Place 3 pieces of dhoop in ghee. Offer 1st piece when the word svaahaa is read:
Om Ayanta idhma aatmaa, Jaatavedas tene-dyasva, Vardhasva chedha vardhya chaasman prajayaa pashubhir,
Brahmaa varchase naan-naa dhyena samedhya svaahaa. Idamagnaye jaatavedase idang na mama.
Oh Agani, accept this piece of wood and ignite your flames. Help us to develop and give us children and the necessities of life. This offering is for the fire and not for me.
Offer 2nd piece of dhoop:
Om Samidha Agani duvasyata, Ghritair-bodhaa yataa tithim,
Aasmin havyaa juhotana svaahaa. Idamagnaye jaatavedase idang na mama.
Offer ghee only:
Om Su samid-dhaaya sho-chishe, Gritang ti-vrang juhotana,
Agnaye jaatavedase svaahaa.
Idamagnaye jaatavedase idang na mama.
The 2nd piece of dhoop and the ghee are being offered for you to develop yourself, your mind and your body. These offerings are for the fire and not for me.
Offer 3rd piece of dhoop:
Om Tan-tvaa samid-bhirangiro, Ghritena vard-dhyaamasi,
Brihacha-chochaa-ya, Visthaya svaahaa. Idamagnaye angirase idang na mama.
Oh Agani the resplendent one, flame up with these offerings.
Recite the following mantra 5 times and offer ghee when the word svaahaa is read. After each offering, place the remaining ghee on the spoon in lota of water:
Om Ayanta idhma aatmaa, Jaatavedadas-tene-dhyasva,
Vard-dhyasva ched-dha, Vard-dhyasya chaas-maan,
Prajayaa pashubhir, Brahma varcha-se naan-naa dhyena samedhya svaahaa.
Idamagnaye jaatavedase idang na mama.
Oh Lord Agani, accept these offerings of ghee and give us children as well as the necessities of life. These offerings are for You oh Lord, it is not for me.
Sprinkle water on the side of the alter as per mantra:
Om Adite anumanyasva (East)
Om Anumate anumanyasva (West)
Om Sarasvate anumanyasva (North)
Om Deva savitah, Prasuva yagya patim bhagaaya,
Divyo gandarvah ketapu, Ketang nah punaatu,
Vaachaspatir vaachang nah svadatu. (All sides)
Oh Mother of Gods conceive, Oh Goddess of Learning conceive. Oh Sun, bless this yajna and the yajmaan with prosperity. Let the Gods bless us with Their divine grace and the Goddess of Speech bless our words.
Offer ghee each time the word svaahaa is read:
Om Prajaapataye svaahaa, Idang Prajaapataye idang na mama.
Om Indraaya svaahaa, Idang Indraaya idang na mama.
Om Somaaya svaahaa, Idang Somaaya idang na mama.
Om Agnaye svaahaa, Idang Agnaye idang na mama.
Offerings to Prajaapati. This is for Prajaapati, not for me.
Offerings to Indra. This is for Indra, not for me.
Offerings to Somaaya. This is for Somaaya, not for me.
Offerings to Agani. This is for Agani, not for me.
May the Gods of Fire, Matter, the Creative Nature and Intellect shower these divine qualities upon us all.
Offer samaagri and ghee each time the word svaahaa is read:
Om Suryo jyotir, jyoti Surya svaahaa.
Om Suryo varcho, jyotir varcha svaahaa.
Om Jyoti Surya, Suryo jyoti svaahaa.
Om Sajur-devena savitra, Sajuraa-tryendra vatyaa,
Jushaana Suryo vetu svaahaa.
Oh Lord Surya, may You accept our offerings unto Thee, shower Your blessings upon us and rid us of our sickness.
Om Agnir jyotir, jyotir agni svaahaa.
Om Agnir varcho, jyotir varcha svaahaa.
Om Agnir jyotir, jyoitr Agni svaahaa.
Om Sajur-devena savitra, Sajuraa-tryendra vatyaa,
Jushaana Agnir vetu svaahaa.
Oh Lord Agani, may You accept our offerings unto Thee. May the power of Your Fire burn away the negativities of our lives.
Om Bhuragnaye praanaaya svaahaa. Idamagnaye praanaaya idang na mama.
Om Bhuvar-vaaya-ve apaanaaya svaahaa. Idam vaaya-ve apaanaaya idang na mama.
Om Svar-aadityaaya vyaanaaya svaahaa. Idam Aadityaaya vyaanaaya idang na mama.
Om Bhur-bhuva svar-agni, vaayav Aadityebhya, praanaa paana vyaane-bhya svaahaa.
Idamagni vaayav Aadityebhya, praanaa paana vyaanebhya idang na mama.
Offerings to the vital energy, to the excretory energy, to Lord Surya (the vital energy of the body) and to the three worlds. These offerings are for them and not for me. May they shower these different energies upon me so I may be able to perform divine tasks unto Bhagavaan.
Recite Gayatri Mantra for 3 times and offer samaagri and ghee each time the word svaahaa is read:
Om Bhur-bhuva-sva, tat Savitur varenyang, bhargo devasya dhimahi,
Dhiyo yo na prachodayaat. Om Bhur-bhuva-sva, svaahaa.
Om aapo jyotir raso amritam, Bhramha bhura bhuva svarom svaahaa.
Divide remaining samaagri and ghee into 3 portions.
Offer 1st portion:
Om sarvang vai purna-anang svaahaa.
Offer 2nd portion:
Om sarvang vai purna-anang svaahaa.
Stand up and offer 3rd portion:
Om Purna-mada purna-midang,
Purnaat purna-mudach-yate,
Purnasya purna-maa-daaya, purna-mevaa vashisyate.
Om sarvang vai purna-anang svaahaa.
The above offerings are for the different devatas and not for me. May all our offerings be accepted and be fulfilled.
Be seated: Take the lota of water with ghee drops, dip into the water and rub on your hands.
Place hands on fire and pass over the enitre body:
Om Tanupaa Agni-asi, tanvang me paahi.
Om Aayurdaa Agni-asi, aayur me dehi.
Om Varchodaa Agni-asi, varcho me dehi.
Om Agni yan-me, tanvaa-unang, tanma aapurna.
Om Medhaang me deva, Savitaa aada-dhaatu.
Om Medhaang me devi, Sarasvati aada-dhaatu.
Om Medhaang me asvinau, deva-vadhak-taang, push-karas-rajau.
Om Tejo asi, tejo mayi dhehi.
Om Virya masi, virya mayi dhehi.
Om Balam asi, balam mayi dhehi.
Om Ojo asi, ojo mayi dhehi.
Om Manyur asi, manyur mayi dhehi.
Om Saho asi, saho mayi dhehi.
May God give us long lasting life, the power of speech, removal of our difficulties and bless our body with strength and power.
